We write to you as adult citizens, voters, and active participants in the intellectual development of our state. The directive mandating standardized uniform dress codes across higher education institutions in Uttar Pradesh represents a fundamental misalignment with the purpose of a university .
A university is not a high school. It is designed to be a crucible for critical inquiry, professional maturity, and creative expression. By subjecting adult scholars to rigid dress codes, the state signals that conformity takes precedence over competence. This policy does not foster equality; instead, it subjects university students to digital mockery and public ridicule, creating a genuine sense of collective inferiority. Furthermore, decent everyday casual wear is economically equivalent to, or cheaper than, a mandatory uniform and its ongoing maintenance.
The policy also overlooks the daily realities of our student body. Hostel residents, managing dense academic schedules and limited laundry facilities, are placed under severe day-to-day logistical stress to maintain a single set of compliant uniforms under threat of academic penalty. In university spaces, where students routinely sit for high-stakes examinations in comfortable, basic attire, the focus must remain entirely on intellectual output.
We respectfully urge you to reconsider this directive. We ask the state and university administrations to invest in laboratories, library access, and global placement opportunities — prioritizing institutional excellence over the policing of adult attire.
